The Ficus House (AIA DESIGN AWARD WINNER)

2014-17

Winner of 2018 Honor Award of Design Excellence Residential from the American Institute of Architects Palm Beach Chapter

Completed

4,000 SF

Our goal was to emphasize the urban character of the neighborhood by presenting an open and compatible massing along the street. The volume was split into areas of one story and two stories, avoiding an overwhelming presence and breaking the roofline and scale of the house.

The composition of the exterior elevation was developed around the beautiful Ficus tree in the front. The windows on the bedrooms and stairway were placed to allow for different views and perspectives of the tree. Different materials were introduced to create a dynamic elevation.

In terms of the general planning of the house, our objective was to break and stretch the mass to embrace the site and the two major existing trees. The master suite pulls from the main body of the house, working almost as a “pavilion in the garden” which by moving forward creates an interior courtyard that brings in natural North light into the living area.

The living, dining and kitchen space is surrounded by operable doors and windows with the goal of providing a seamless transition between interior and exterior. In order to provide a variety of exterior experiences while protecting the interior glazed area from the effects of heat, different layers of shading features were used such as deep porches, an aluminum pergola and concrete overhangs. The features of solar control were designed to provide a distinct appearance in the tradition of South Florida Modern Architecture.

The material selection in the interior was developed in a warm palette of rich woods, contrasting with the cooler white and gray stone of the exterior. This juxtaposition emphasizes the transition between the domestic and the urban.
